Murphy's Law

I'll start at the beginning...

I was getting ready on a normal Thursday morning (8/25) and went out to my car to get something that I had left in there overnight - and to my surprise - my work backpack (containing my laptop which is my life) was gone. I noticed that there was stuff from my console all over the driver seat and it hit me that someone broke into my car and took my computer. I immediately freaked out, ran in to tell Cody and call the police and my life has not been so great since. After I talked with the cop and he took down all the information, I was on my way to the office to get a replacement computer and it suddenly hit me that my awesome camera was in the back of my car from the weekend before and it was gone too. I burst into tears. I was pretty hysterical for a few minutes. At that point - EVERYTHING was gone. All my pictures of Gavin from the last 8 months are gone. Well anyway - by the end of that day I was better. I was thankful that nothing happened to my car, my house, my family and that these material items can be replaced someday.

The following Monday morning (four days later on 8/29) I was getting ready for work (again) and Gavin was already up and playing around in our bedroom. Normal routine stuff. I was straightening my hair with my flat iron (which Gavin has never ever messed with and is always as far away from the edge of the counter as possible) and I sat it down to check out the back of my hair with a mirror. I look down and he has his right hand lodged in between it with the hot part sitting on the top of his hand. I immediately freak out and take it off asap, pick him up and rush him to the kitchen to get water on it. His reaction was very delayed, but the crying/screaming definitely followed for quite a while. We decided to take him to the emergency room because it looked pretty bad. They immediately got us in (nothing but amazing words for Cook Children's!!) and examined his hand. They assessed that he has deep 2nd degree burns, wrapped it and gave him some pain medicine to calm him down. He was such a champ and has been ever since. It has been two full weeks (as of yesterday). At first, the rehab specialist for burns suggested that we consult a plastic surgeon because they thought he would need a skin graph to help the healing process. However, our last appointment on Friday afternoon they decided that we definitely won't need to see a plastic surgeon and that it's healing really well. We go back again (we've been several times in the past two weeks) on Thursday and I'm hoping that we can finally take off the bandage/wrapping for good. Prayers please!!! I've added a few pictures from our emergency room visit below.

This is the burn about an hour after it happened. The white part is the deep 2nd degree burn. It had a blister for about two days. The bottom of his hand is burned as well, just not near as bad.
Once they gave him some medicine for the pain and wrapped it, he was back to himself. He did great considering the circumstances!
Finished wrapping after seeing the rehab doctor for burns. Cody is a master at this now since we changed it once a day for two weeks straight!

After a long week of emergency room, doctors visits and catching up at work, I was really looking forward to a long relaxing three-day weekend with the holiday. I had planned on going to my parents house and going shopping at First Monday in Canton with my mom. I took Gavin to the doctor and we got back home around 5pm on Friday (9/2). I was starting to pack and he started getting really fussy and wanted me to hold him. I couldn't figure out what was going on...and then suddenly he started throwing up. He ended up having a pretty bad stomach virus. He slept in bed with me so that I could make sure and roll him over when he threw up. It finally slowed down about 3am and we slept from 3-7am. Here's a picture of him resting/sleeping in my bed with me.
After a long night, I decided to still make the drive because he seemed to be feeling much better. He slept most of the way and then about 5 minutes before we got there he threw up again in the car seat. Poor guy! His Nana's and I got him all cleaned up and then he stayed with Nana Kim while my mom and I shopped at Canton. I did enjoy my weekend...however I came home on Monday to a sick husband and then I got the virus on Wednesday.

Gavin had another hand checkup on Friday afternoon (9/9) at 4pm. I was really wanting to go visit my friend in the hospital who had just had her second little baby boy (Congrats Jennifer!!!!), but it would be a trip to Flower Mound with Gavin at 5pm on a Friday...so we both decided it would be better to come at a different time. So G and I got home around 4:45 and I noticed that there was a lot of water in the garage. It took me a second to realize that it was coming from our hot water heater (located in the garage). I grabbed Gavin, ran inside to see some standing water in my kitchen. I took him with me to my neighbors house to see if her husband was home so he could help me turn off the main water line. After locating another neighbor because her husband wasn't home (and Cody was at the football game) we finally got the water turned off. I ended up calling a friend to see if her husband could help me out to figure out the problem. Turns out, a leaky/busted pipe in the wall between my garage and kitchen had malfunctioned (broke) and who knows how long the hot water was running out into my walls. The foundation was soaked all the way down the side of the house. A million thanks to Julia and Danny for coming to my rescue, the room and board all weekend and the hot shower!!!! As it currently stands - we still have fans in the kitchen trying to dry out the walls. Our kitchen is quarantined with plastic from ceiling to floor. I think tonight everything is supposed to be dry and we have more people coming out to assess the damage. We have some ruined cabinets that I know of, just not sure about the rest of it. We finally got hot water about 7pm last night.

It's incredibly true about Murphy's Law...it has been said several ways:
"Anything that can go wrong will go wrong."
"Anything that can possibly go wrong, does."
"If anything can go wrong, it will."
And what I say and hear most is..."When it rains, is pours".

I had actually started telling Cody recently (before school started back) that "It is what it is". It's my way of telling him that we need to accept what has happened and move on. No need to dwell on it or worry - just keep your head up and keep on going. I now have had to tell myself this over the past few weeks!!

My awesome mom could tell that I was pretty down about everything on Sunday afternoon. It was a really long weekend and not in a good way. I worried so much when we weren't home about how much damage the water did to the walls, cabinets and floor. Still worrying...but it's getting better. Anyway - she sent me text later on in the day and sent me a bible verse:

James 1: 2-4
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

Thanks mom.

Gosh...I just wanted to cry as I continued reading your post and more and more things were going wrong. :( I was just hoping it would have a good ending. And it did. Nothing materialistic "good"....but the best thing that could happen...you let God guide you and trust in Him. He won't put anything on your plate you can't handle. He is just testing your faith. Keep your head up and stay strong. I am so sorry you guys have had to endure such awful things recently. But just know the Lord is with you. I love you guys and hope things get on the up and up for ya soon!!
